California Corrections officials report that the price for a smuggled cellphone inside prisons are $1,000.
Officials were on pace to seize 12,000 smuggled cellphones from inmates in 2012. In 2011, corrections officials seized 15,000 smuggled cellphones from inmates.
In the first half of 2012, authorities accused 54 prison guards and employees of smuggling in cellphones for inmates.
Inmates use the cellphones to continue to manage their street gangs, intimidate witnesses, and coordinate attacks on prison guards.
