Cost to defend Human Smugglers in Australia

The Australian Government has paid up to $9.1 Million (8.6 Million Australian Dollars) in court fees to defend human smugglers from Indonesia between September 2008 and July 2011.

292 Indonesian nationals were in court being defended by legal aid attorneys in July 2011, with an additional 138 people already being convicted. The average cost to defend someone accused of human smuggling is $21,248 (20,000 Australian Dollars).
