Cannabis Production Income in Afghanistan

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that Afghanistan is the largest producer of hashish in the world, producing between 1,500 to 3,500 metric tons of hashish per year.

Cannabis production earns Afghan farmers a higher net income when compared to opium. An Afghan farmer can earn up to $3,341 per hectare growing cannabis compared to $2,005 per hectare growing opium. The difference in costs is due to lower labor costs involved in growing cannabis.
