2011 Opium Poppy cultivation in Afghanistan

In 2011, farmers in Afghanistan increased the hectares of opium poppies by 7 percent from the previous year to 131,000 hectares, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. 17 provinces in the country were affected by poppy cultivation in 2011, up from 14 provinces in 2010.

For each hectare of opium, the price paid to farmers in 2011 was $10,700, over double the price of $4,900 in 2010.
